Glory Days...
There was little TV revenue and fewer sponsors; just win money and appearance fees. You could buy a complete 392" Hemi for $75
(from the auto salvage yard), blowers were a reworked GMC-671 with stock rotors- Blocks and heads were cast iron, not aluminum. Early on, you towed your racer to the track on a trailer - it took 3 full race-teams to total 18 wheels! Drag slicks were smaller than today, and offered nowhere near the traction. Drag Strips were often blacktop with gravel pits and a few bleachers. Quite a few were converted airfields. There were also some great professional operations (Pomona, Lions, Capitol, Englishtown, OCIR) but those were not where we ran the Monday, Wednesday and Friday night Match Races - the races where we made the real money. Those big tracks were for the sixteen and thirty-two Funny Car weekend races where we got nice winner's purses, but mainly they were where we run what we brung & got the "ink" to help our bookings. Was it fun? Yes! Tough? At times, but we were racing our Funny Cars and living our dreams.

Don Garlits Web-Site

Official Web-Site for "Big Daddy" Don Garlits, voted the Number-One
Drag Racer of all time by the Nat'l Hot Rod Ass'n (NHRA).
In early 2009, Mr. Garlits commissioned me to do a complete

You may wish to consider spending some time "surfing" through his
web-presence, to get an idea of the scope of his past and present operations.
