Supercharged Nitro Funny Car (AA/FC) Web Site for Fans of '60s & '70s Drag Racing. W/" Video" plus "Audio" clips |
Glory Days... There was little TV revenue and fewer sponsors; just win money and appearance fees. You could buy a complete 392" Hemi for $75 (from the auto salvage yard), blowers were a reworked GMC-671 with stock rotors- Blocks and heads were cast iron, not aluminum. Early on, you towed your racer to the track on a trailer - it took 3 full race-teams to total 18 wheels! Drag slicks were smaller than today, and offered nowhere near the traction. Drag Strips were often blacktop with gravel pits and a few bleachers. Quite a few were converted airfields. There were also some grand facilities (Pomona, Lions, Capitol, Englishtown, OCIR) but those were not where we ran the Monday, Wednesday and Friday night $$$ Match Races. Hey, it was great - we were racing our Funny Cars and living our dreams. |
